COOPAC is a fair-trade certified cooperative located on the Rwandan side of Lake Kivu. It began in 2001 with 110 members and has since grown to 8,000 members. Committed to environmental stewardship and social responsibility, COOPAC has made a number of strides toward progressing the coffee farming with its members in Ack, Ubuzima, Tuzumurane, Kopabm, Abakundakurima, Abanyamurava. Significantly, they ensure waste-byproducts from processing are used as fertalizers, rather than being dumped in to the lake; they’ve assisted in the construction of a school and health care clinics, along with roads and bridges; they’re looking to distribute cows and goats to the most productive farmers; and they provide an agricultural advisor to help teach the latest production methods.
The washing station of Kirorero is remote and only accessible by boat. Coffee received here must be consolodated before being sent back up the lake by boat to Nyamwenda CWS and trucked out to the main access point.
